Everyone Drives Manuals Here!

Sunday, June 19, 2005

On Thursday I looked into renting a car to drive from Barcelona to San Sebastian for the weekend. The trip is approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) and would have been a lot of fun. However, it turns out that the only car rental company which rents out automatic transmission vehicles is Hertz and the only models with automatics are the higher end expensive ones. I had no idea that manual transmission vehicles were so common in Spain and I definitely need to learn how to drive a stick. I never really had the opportunity to learn how to drive anything but an automatic as that is all my family has ever owned.

Since I was “stuck” in Barcelona this weekend, I took the time to do a little work on the computer and walk around a take pictures a bit. There are only a few weeks remaining in this semester and I definitely need to start working on my final projects and paper.

Smoking is a Disgusting Habit and Even Worse Indoors

Friday, June 10, 2005

The thing I dislike the most about Barcelona, and Catalunya in general, is the number of people who smoke. It is not just that people smoke openly but that they do so indoors as well - even in elevators. Every pack of cigarettes has a massive notice on it that says that smoking will kill you and yet people seem to not just care and smoke anyways. It is literally impossible to avoid second hand smoke in this city. It is simply disgusting.

Cooking with Frank (hahaha)

Thursday, June 02, 2005

Since it is a lot cheaper to eat food from the super mercat (grocery store) instead of eating out, I have been playing around with various easy-to-make meals. My attempt last night at fried rice did not go so well as the rice was still very chewy; apparently Uncle Ben's and Rice-o-Roni have done something special to their rice. I think that I have to boil the rice thoroughly before trying to fry it.

However, what I did this afternoon turned out very well. It consisted of two bowls worth of spiral noodles (Tornillo), two cloves of garlic (they call them teeth in Spanish, which sounds funny but makes sense), a carrot, black pepper and salt, and a little vinegar. Basically, I started boiling the noodles and chopped up the garlic and carrot and put everything in the small pot to boil. It turned out very good.

This is the first weekend I will be staying in Barcelona since I have been here. The last two weekends I went hiking and camping at Montserrat and then to the Pyrenees in Southern France. I hope to do a day hike up to Montjuic here in the city and otherwise get some work done.
